Gwalia’s Under-17s were beaten 2-0 at home by a well-organised Carmarthen side on Sunday, in a fiercely contested match that produced an entertaining spectacle for neutral spectators despite ending in defeat for the hosts. Gwalia knew in advance that they faced a stern test against opponents who competed in the U17s league last season, and had prepared for a hard-fought encounter. What they had not anticipated was conceding inside the opening minutes, a soft goal that immediately put them on the back foot and disrupted the game plan they had intended to implement.
The setback had a visible effect on the hosts, who lost their composure for the following ten minutes as they worked to prevent Carmarthen from extending their advantage. Passes that would ordinarily find their target went astray, and despite the effort put in by every player on the pitch, momentum remained firmly with the visitors during that spell.
Gradually, through hard work and determination, Gwalia began to find their way back into the contest. There were extended periods in which the hosts looked the stronger of the two sides, creating a number of promising opportunities and putting real pressure on the Carmarthen defence. However, they were unable to find a way through: efforts drifted narrowly wide of the target, while the Carmarthen goalkeeper produced several important saves to deny an equaliser.
At the other end, Gwalia’s own goalkeeper Allana was the standout performer, earning the Player of the Match award for a string of outstanding saves that kept her side in the game and gave the team every chance of fighting back. The resolve shown by the Gwalia squad was all the more notable given that they lost several players to injury and illness as the match progressed. Despite the disruption, every remaining player continued to work tirelessly, reflecting the commitment and togetherness that has become a hallmark of this group throughout the season.
Carmarthen ultimately settled the contest in the 67th minute, doubling their lead to make it 2-0. Many teams might have accepted defeat at that stage, but Gwalia responded positively once again, continuing to build from the back and create further chances, only to be denied by fine margins as the game drew to a close. In the end, the result did not go Gwalia’s way, but the manner of the performance told a different story to the scoreline. Effort, determination and quality were all in evidence throughout, and there was a strong sense that, on another day, and without conceding so early, the outcome could have been very different.
The players gave everything from the first whistle to the last, and while the defeat is a disappointing one, their commitment, resilience and desire could not be faulted. The squad will now look to learn from the setback, regroup, and turn their focus towards the next challenge on the fixture list.
Gwalia u16s v Dinas

Gwalia’s Under-16s delivered another convincing and powerful performance as they beat Dinas with a performance that further strengthened their case as a genuine team to beat. From the first minute a Gwalia side growing in confidence with each fixture took full control of proceedings early on. The hosts played some excellent, fluent football throughout the first half and were fully deserving of the lead they built, opening the scoring through Ellie.
Gwalia continued to press and create chances as the half progressed, and a second goal, also from Ellie, extended their advantage before a brace from Lexi took the score further out of Dinas’s reach. Dinas did find a reply during the half, but it did little to disrupt the home side’s rhythm. Gwalia went in at the break.
The second half saw Gwalia dominate proceedings, using the width of the pitch and their pace out wide to consistently create openings. The result was a ruthless display in front of goal Freya J was particularly effective, while Lexi added two more goals to her first-half brace.
Ellie was named player of the day, recognised not only for her goals but for showing the right attitude throughout the match and for the support she gave to her team-mates on the pitch.
Gwalia’s Under-16s will look to carry this form forward next week when they travel to face Cardiff Met in a friendly fixture, one that is expected to provide a tougher test as the side continues to build momentum this season.
