FA Women’s National League Cup Gwalia United were narrowly beaten 1–0 by Kidderminster Harriers Women at USW Sport on Sunday, with Amelia Hiscox’s second-half goal proving the difference in a competitive encounter.
Gwalia made six changes from the previous game, using the fixture as an opportunity to rotate the squad and give valuable minutes to players who had not had as much game time in recent weeks. Despite the changes, the hosts started brightly and looked the more threatening side during the opening stages.
Anya Grunewald registered the first effort of the afternoon inside the opening minute, seeing her shot comfortably held by the Kidderminster goalkeeper. Gwalia continued to move the ball well, with some neat interplay between Grunewald and Katie Quick almost opening up the visitors once again.
The hosts continued to look lively going forward, with Molly Kehoe and Bonnie Gready beginning to cause problems through their movement and combination play. The pair linked well in attack on nine minutes, while Katie Davies and Esme Kilburn-Thompson also combined effectively down the right shortly afterwards, only for the assistant’s flag to bring a promising attack to an end.
Kidderminster gradually settled into the contest and began to offer more of a threat themselves. Their first effort came on ten minutes as Grady’s attempt sailed over the crossbar, while Megan Bible had earlier dealt well with a dangerous attack from Bevan.
Gwalia continued to create opportunities and came close to breaking the deadlock on 17 minutes. Quick and Kehoe combined superbly before releasing Gready, whose effort was well saved by the Kidderminster goalkeeper. The hosts remained positive in possession and continued to look for openings, with Gready again involved shortly afterwards as the ball almost fell kindly for Kehoe inside the area.
As the half progressed, the pace of the game settled, with Kidderminster growing increasingly comfortable in the contest. Gwalia were briefly caught switching off in midfield on 43 minutes, allowing the visitors an opportunity to shoot, although the resulting effort went wide.
The home side responded with some excellent defensive work late in the half. Cerys Jones showed good awareness and composure to deal with a dangerous cross into the Gwalia penalty area as Kidderminster looked to create one final opportunity before the break.
Neither side could find a breakthrough and the teams went into half-time level at 0–0.
The second half continued in much the same competitive fashion, with both sides battling strongly for control but neither able to turn their pressure into a clear-cut opportunity. The breakthrough eventually came from an unfortunate moment for Gwalia. A speculative ball forward took a difficult bounce, allowing Amelia Hiscox to react quickly and cleverly scoop the ball over Ameliah Yarwood and into the net.
Gwalia attempted to respond and continued to work hard, with the changes bringing life off the bench. Gwalia threw the proverbial kitchen sink at the Harriers defence in the final 15 minutes but could not unlock the opponents’ defence. Ultimately, the hosts were unable to find an equaliser and Kidderminster held on for a 1–0 victory.
While the result was disappointing, the fixture provided another valuable opportunity for Gwalia to rotate the squad, manage minutes and give players the chance to stake their claim for further involvement. There were also encouraging signs in the attacking combinations during the first half, with Quick, Kehoe, Gready and Grunewald particularly lively as Gwalia created several promising openings.
