Match Preview – Gwalia United v Yate Town

Laura O'Sullivan-Jones

Gwalia United will look to keep their proud home record in the Women’s FA Cup intact when they host Yate Town in the first round proper at USW Sport Park on Sunday (2pm).

Gwalia go into the tie in fine form, unbeaten in five games in league and cup, and they have not lost a home match in the competition since November 2023.

Sunday’s match will be the 34th time the club has played at home in the Women’s FA Cup, and they will be aiming for a fourth successive home win in the competition.

Gwalia booked their place in the first round proper with a 6-0 win over AFC Stoneham, of the Southern Region Women’s Football League Division One South, in the third qualifying round.

Their league form has been just as encouraging. Last weekend’s 3-1 victory away at Maidenhead United stretched their unbeaten run to five matches, with Daisy Ackerman scoring in a fourth consecutive game.

Gloucestershire side Yate Town, formerly known as Pucklechurch Sports Ladies, reached this stage with a 2-0 win over Bishop’s Cleeve at the South West Interiors Stadium, with Amy Jefferies and Kimberly Maggs scoring.

Yate are seventh in the Southern Region Women’s Football League Premier Division after winning one and losing three of their opening four league games. However, they will travel to Wales hoping the cup can offer some respite from their league campaign.

Gwalia manager Cori Williams-Mills is expecting a hard-fought contest, and says both sides will be dreaming of what could lie ahead.

“The games can be nail-biting, nervous affairs, and since every single round is an opportunity for teams to get closer to a dream fixture, the magic of the cup not only presents itself on the field – the cup itself being synonymous with giant-killing – but also off the field,” she said.

“Which, of course, both Yate Town and ourselves will be vying for today. We want our name in the hat for the next round, and today’s encounter will be, I am sure, a competitive tussle in what is undoubtedly the world’s best sporting competition.”

Head-to-Head

This will be the first time the two clubs have met in a competitive fixture.

Match Officials
