Our opponents: London City Lionesses

Talent from Real Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich London City Lionesses’ new owner Michelle Kang is revolutionising the Bromley based side. Kang bought the club on December the 15th 2023. A year on, they host Gwalia United, who have a similar story.

The London City Lionesses were founded in 2019, breaking away from the Millwall Lionesses. It would not be overstating it to say that what they have done since then is incredible. This season in the FA Women’s Championship, they are in the hunt for a spot in the WSL having come third in 2023 and second in 2022.

Manager Jocelyn Precheur joined them at the start of this season from Paris St Germain, a club with whom he won the Coupe De France in his first and only season. Interestingly, Precheur spent years as his father’s assistant manager before taking the reins in 2023. The London City Lionesses have a host of international talent who represented their countries in the recent international window. They have players who were in the Swedish squad, the Scottish squad, the Irish squad and the England U23s squad among their ranks.

Sofia Jakobsson and captain of the club Kosovare Asllani were the Swedish callups and both have three assists thus far in the Championship, joint second for assist totals in the league.

Jakobsson has five goal involvements in as many appearances. The 34-year-old boasts an impressive 18-year career so far, playing for the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and joining London City from San Diego Wave earlier this year. Asllani, 29, has also played for Real Madrid, alongside Manchester City, PSG and most recently AC Milan. She scored for her country on Tuesday night as they secured a spot in the Euros alongside Wales. Izzy Goodwin might be the pick of the bunch as she was called up to the U23s England squad and is currently the FA Women’s Championship top scorer with seven goals. She made an appearance for England alongside her club teammate Teyah Goldie on Monday. Goldie is another London City player with a dazzling resume, on loan from Arsenal. Cerys Brown and Emily Orman are another two WSL loans that London City’s new ownership has brought in from Chelsea. Michelle Kang bought the club in 2023 and is the instrumental figure behind the club’s recent blockbuster signings.

The FA Cup Round 2 match between London City Lionesses and Gwalia United on Sunday at 2:00PM will be streamed live from our match centre where you can also follow the live updates.
