Scahill earns Bristol Rovers dramatic draw at former club Gwalia

Former Gwalia United midfielder Ruby Scahill scored a stunning 93rd-minute equaliser as Bristol Rovers fought back to draw 2-2 at USW Sports Park. Gwalia had twice led through Esme Kilburn-Thompson, but Scahill’s late strike rescued a point for the visitors in an exciting, competitive league encounter writes Chloe Evans.

The hosts began brightly, with Daisy Ackerman going close inside the opening minute. Rovers threatened from set-pieces, including a seventh-minute free-kick that curled towards goalkeeper Benni Haaland, but Gwalia dealt with the early pressure. Both sides competed fiercely for possession, with Manon Pearce a creative shining light in the midfield, and Gwalia’s defensive work helped keep Rovers at bay. Esme Kilburn-Thompson put the home side ahead on 20 minutes, finishing a poacher’s goal after Gwalia had started to make their pressure count.

Rovers responded by pushing forward. They created several opportunities in the closing stages of the first half, only to be denied by a determined Gwalia defence. Their persistence was rewarded five minutes before the break, when Anais Trinci converted from a free kick to bring the visitors level.

Half-time: Gwalia United 1-1 Bristol Rovers

Gwalia regained the lead four minutes into the second half. Ackerman supplied the assist, impressing with a clever and pacy assist while setting up Kilburn-Thompson to score her second goal of the afternoon and put the hosts back in front. Rovers looked for another equaliser, trying their luck from distance as the match grew more physical. Challenges came in across the pitch, while Trinci needed treatment after one tackle. Gwalia had an opportunity to extend their advantage when they won a free-kick just outside the box late, but their timing at the set-piece was off and the chance went begging. Moments later a Summer Evans free kick, and a Kylie Nolan shot, just sailed inches clear.

Ackerman tried to make the game safe in the closing minutes, just being denied nay a defender as she was in on goal, as Gwalia looked for a third. But with the hosts still holding a narrow lead, Rovers found one last moment of quality. In the 93rd minute, Scahill struck a spectacular effort against her former club to make it 2-2. The late goal capped a dramatic finish and shifted the pressure back onto Gwalia, who pushed forward in search of a winner. Rovers defended resolutely, however, and held on through the final moments. Emma Thomas’s shot going high and wide.

The draw reflected a contest in which both teams had spells of control and chances to take all three points. For Gwalia, Kilburn-Thompson’s brace looked enough until the very end; for Rovers, Scahill’s memorable strike made sure their late push was rewarded.
