Gwalia United return to FA Women’s National League Division One South West action this Sunday, when they welcome league leaders Moneyfields to the USW Sport Park, with kick-off at 2pm.
After a disappointing home defeat last week in the FAWNL Cup Group C clash with Kidderminster Harriers, Cori Williams-Mills’ side will look to bounce back against one of the division’s promotion favourites.
Moneyfields, under the guidance of new manager Jack Randall, who took over from Karl Watson in the summer, have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season in both the league and league cup.
Last weekend the Money’s beat Southampton PGA 1-0 in the FAWNL Cup, thanks to Britt Jeal’s second-half header, making it two wins from two in Group E.
Their last league fixture was a 4-0 win over Marine Academy Plymouth, which sees them sit on top of the Division One South West table, level on points with Bridgewater United and Wycombe Wanderers, but with a superior goal difference.
Gwalia – also unbeaten in the league this season – will be relishing a return to league action, having not played a league fixture since the 1-0 win over Bournemouth Sports on 23 August.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s game, Gwalia manager Cori Williams-Mills said:
“It is hard to believe that we are only at the fourth weekend of the league season and already have a top-of-the-table clash between two unbeaten sides. That says a lot about the start both teams have made, but for us it is another opportunity to test ourselves against one of the strongest teams in the division.”
“Moneyfields come into the game sitting at the top of the table and, like us, have made an unbeaten start. They will be full of confidence and will rightly feel they have earned their position through their performances so far. We know we will have to be at our very best to get something from the game.”
With both teams currently unbeaten in the league, this weekend’s encounter should make for an entertaining fixture.
Head-to-Head
This will be only the second occasion that the sides have met in south Wales, the last coming in January 2023 – when Gwalia United were known as Cardiff City Ladies – as Moneyfields won the Division One South West fixture 4-0.
Match Officials
Professional Referee Group Hannah Gardner will officiate the game, assisted by Charlotte Sparling Haythornthwaite of the Leicestershire & Rutland County FA (LRCFA) – both of whom regularly officiate WSL2 fixtures – and UK Armed Forces Football Secretary Gareth Dunn.
