Match Preview: Gwalia United v Brighton & Hove Albion

Gwalia United host Brighton & Hove Albion’s academy side this Sunday in the quarter-finals of the Women’s National League plate competition at the USW Sport Park. Kick-off is at 2pm.

The Cori Williams-Mills era as manager started off with three points, as we beat Billericay Town, scoring two goals late on, winning 2-1.

Yasmin Cowley gave the away side the lead early on in the second half in search of a first league win of the campaign. However, Gwalia dug deep, showing great character to turn defeat into victory.

In the last minute of regular time, Keira O’Keefe was fouled in the box. Captain Beth McGowan stepped up, passing the ball confidently past Tyrii Bell to equalise.

One soon became two, with O’Keefe setting up Georgia Walters, whose initial shot was blocked, but then volleyed the rebound into the top corner to complete the comeback, and our first league win since September.

Victory ensured Gwalia climbed out of the bottom two in the league, ending the matchweek in 10th place.

Visitors Brighton were eliminated in the FA WNL Cup, despite winning their opening match versus Worthing 7-0, the Seagulls were defeated by fellow Southern Premier side Lewes and Fulham, dropping into the Plate competition.

Wins away from home over Bristol Rovers and Norwich City in the previous rounds set up Sunday afternoon’s tie with Gwalia.

Last time out for Danielle Bowman’s Albion side, they travelled to the North West, facing Manchester City on Wednesday, losing 3-1.

Should the scores be level at full–time, the game will go to extra-time and penalties if needed.
