Gwalia United produced a commanding second-half performance to beat Yate Town 5-0 and progress in the Women’s FA Cup, writes Chloe Evans.
Emma Thomas opened the scoring after just one minute, then added a spectacular second-half strike to complete her brace. Summer Evans, Daisy Ackerman and Manon Pearce also scored as Gwalia pulled away after the break.

Thomas gave the hosts the perfect start, converting from a corner by Evans. Gwalia pressed for a second, with Kylie Nolan testing the Yate goalkeeper in the 19th minute before sending another effort over the crossbar.
Nolan was brought down in the penalty area in the 10th minute, but the referee waved away Gwalia’s appeal. Ellie Mai Sanford had earlier sent a cross wide, and later headed off target as the home side continued to look for a second goal.
Gwalia came closest to extending their lead midway through the first half. Ackerman struck the bar in the 35th minute and, within two minutes, Esme Kilburn-Thompson also hit the woodwork. Yate survived that spell and reached half-time trailing by only one goal.

The hosts made their pressure count three minutes after the restart. Nolan did excellent work to create an opportunity for Evans, who finished to make it 2-0 in the 48th minute.
Ackerman then added Gwalia’s third, giving them a more comfortable cushion. Thomas followed with a wonder strike to double her tally and put the result beyond Yate’s reach. Pearce completed the scoring to seal a 5-0 victory. Yate had defended resolutely in the first half, but the second goal shifted the contest decisively in Gwalia’s favour. The home side took control, added three more goals and finished with a convincing cup win.

Before kick-off at the University of South Wales Sport venue, both teams observed a minute’s silence in commemoration of the Aberfan tragedy, sixty years after the disaster.
