Gwalia u17s produced a determined display to draw 2-2 with a strong Penybont side, coming from behind twice in a match that underlined the progress they have made in recent weeks. From the opening whistle, Gwalia looked confident and composed. They controlled long spells, moved the ball with precision and repeatedly found teammates with well-timed passes and runs. Their positive start put Penybont under pressure, but it was the visitors who took the lead.
Gwalia responded without letting the setback disrupt their rhythm. Their equaliser came from sharp pressing and quick thinking. After the Penybont goalkeeper rolled the ball out to her defence, a loose touch gave Sienna the chance to step in. She intercepted and picked out Summer, who finished calmly to make it 1-1.
The first half remained closely contested. Both teams showed plenty of intensity, with strong challenges and determined runs, while Gwalia stayed organised and limited Penybont’s opportunities. They continued to create chances of their own as the sides went into the break level.
The second half began at a frantic pace, with neither team willing to give ground. Penybont regained the advantage with a free-kick, scoring against the run of play, but Gwalia again showed their resilience. The home side pushed forward in search of another equaliser and came close on several occasions. Some efforts narrowly missed the target, while others were kept out by the Penybont goalkeeper.
Gwalia’s persistence was rewarded when Lola received the ball, beat two defenders and unleashed an excellent strike to level the scores at 2-2. The result leaves Gwalia with a point, but their performance offered plenty of encouragement. Against one of the strongest sides they have faced, they competed throughout, controlled significant periods and showed quality in possession.
Summer and Lola were Gwalia’s goalscorers, while Finn was named player of the match for an impressive contribution to the team’s effort.
Every player contributed to a hard-working display, with confidence and determination evident across the pitch. Gwalia may feel they had enough chances to claim all three points, but the draw was a reflection of a match in which both sides fought hard.
There was a marked difference in the team’s performance compared with recent weeks. Their organisation, teamwork and belief were clear, and the response to falling behind twice was particularly impressive. Gwalia will take confidence from the display as they look ahead to their next fixtures.
