A Shirt 50 Years in the Making: Gwalia United Launch 50th Anniversary Kit

This weekend’s match against Tottenham Hotspur will mark a very special moment for Gwalia United. The team will walk out wearing a brand-new 50th anniversary kit — a shirt fifty years in the making, celebrating the club’s proud history and the people who built it.

The new design pays tribute to the club’s beginnings in 1975, when Cardiff City Ladies first formed. Every part of the shirt has been created to reflect that heritage — from the fabric and colour to the badge and detailing. It’s not just a football shirt, but a piece of history.

The anniversary kit has been designed by Chair Michele Adams MBE and Club Secretary Karen Jones MBE, who were both part of the club’s original journey, working closely with Will Morgan from kit manufacturer TOR. Together, they have produced a shirt that honours the club’s roots while celebrating how far women’s football has come.

The design proudly features the original Cardiff City Ladies badge, representing the people, players and volunteers who laid the foundations for women’s football in Wales and who helped the club grow into what it is today. Within the shirt design, you’ll also find a subtle ‘50 Years’ mark, acknowledging this special milestone in Gwalia United’s history.

One of the standout details is the return to the club’s original blue colour, inspired by the shade first worn in 1975. It’s a striking, traditional tone that connects today’s players to those who played in the early years, often travelling long distances and buying their own kits just to take part. This blue is more than a colour — it’s a symbol of resilience, pride, and unity.

“The 50th anniversary shirt means everything to us,” said Chair Michele Adams MBE. “It’s a reminder of how this club started — from a group of determined women who loved football and wanted to make something lasting. This shirt is for them, for everyone who has ever been part of the journey.”

Club Secretary Karen Jones MBE added: “We wanted the design to show our history but also feel modern for the players wearing it today. It’s been a real team effort with TOR to create something that connects our past and our future.”

Will Morgan from TOR said: “From the first meeting, Michele and Karen were clear that this had to be a proper tribute to the club’s story. We looked at original shirts, badges, and fabric samples to make sure it felt authentic. We wanted something that players and supporters could wear with pride, knowing the meaning behind every detail.”

The new shirt will be worn for the first time this weekend when Gwalia United face Tottenham Hotspur — a fitting occasion to unveil a kit that celebrates half a century of progress and passion. Supporters will be able to buy the replica shirt online straight after the match on TOR’s website.

For Gwalia United, this anniversary is more than a number. It’s a celebration of the people who kept women’s football alive in Wales through dedication, sacrifice, and love of the game. From 1975 to 2025, the club has grown, evolved, and inspired — but its heart remains the same.

Fifty years on, the message is clear: this is not just a new kit. It’s a symbol of everything that Gwalia United stands for — history, community, and belief in what’s still to come.
