Gwalia United & USW: A New Era of Excellence Begins

Gwalia United are delighted to confirm that the club will train and play at the University of South Wales for the 2025/26 season — a partnership that represents a bold step forward in our journey to becoming a leading women’s football club. Located in Trefforest, the University of South Wales is widely regarded as one of the best football facilities in the country. Its cutting-edge infrastructure, championship-level playing surface, and elite-standard training provision have already hosted professional clubs and international squads — and now provide home for Gwalia’s senior team.

This collaboration marks more than just a venue arrangement. It reflects the club’s deep commitment to creating a professional environment that matches the ambitions of our players and staff. The USW Sport Park is not only a top-class playing ground — it is a centre of excellence that rivals anything found in the Women’s Championship or WSL2. With two immaculate floodlit grass pitches, several high-quality 3G and hybrid surfaces, GPS analysis capacity, strength and conditioning facilities, video review rooms, and access to expert medical support, the environment gives Gwalia players everything they need to train, recover, and compete like professionals.

“At Gwalia, we’re not just trying to exist in the women’s game — we’re trying to drive it forward,” said James Thomas, Gwalia Manager. “USW is a key part of that mission. The quality of facilities is simply first-class, and we’re incredibly fortunate to have a home base that prepares our players for the elite level.” Gwalia will benefit from having the significant intellectual property that lies within USW’s course structure, with relationships already having been built with the performance analysis and the strength and conditioning departments at the university.

Pontypridd United Women, who also use USW as their home ground, have recently earned promotion. That shared base allows for closer collaboration between two ambitious clubs, and reflects a shared vision for the development of women’s football in South Wales. The recent success of Pontypridd United Women is not only a sign of the strength of the football being played at USW — it also creates a vibrant, competitive, and aspirational atmosphere that benefits all involved.

“Our partnership with USW and the shared link with Pontypridd United Women is grounded in mutual respect and shared values,” said Thomas. “They’ve shown what’s possible in this environment, and we aim to build on that — to create a high-performance culture where players thrive, progress, and push for the next level.”

In a landscape where infrastructure is often the difference between potential and progress, Gwalia United’s home at USW represents both. It is a statement of intent. It is the start of something bigger.
