Lewes v Gwalia United – Preview

Stevie McCarthy-Campbell takes charge of his first match as Gwalia Head Coach, as we make the 200-mile journey to Lewes on Sunday, looking to return to winning ways in the National League Southern Premier Division at The Dripping Pan (kick-off: 2pm).

You can watch Stevie’s first interview on our Instagram and X channels (@GwaliaUnited).

Last weekend, Gwalia fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat at the USW Sport Park at the hands of Real Bedford, with Abbie Bensted’s early strike the difference even though this was arguably one of Gwalia’s strongest performances of the season. This result saw Gwalia drop to fifth place in the table. Meanwhile, for Lewes, they lost 2-1 to AFC Bournemouth, the league leaders. Leah Lane gave Lewes the lead in first-half stoppage time. Jenna Markham equalised early in the second-half, before Jessica Hennessy handed the Cherries victory late on.

Only two points separate the sides, highlighting the competitive nature of the division this campaign.

Lewes sit in eighth place, registering two wins from their six matches. Both victories came in August, beating Exeter City (1-2) and Real Bedford (2-0). However, for the Rooks, they are currently on a three-game winless streak.

Now managed by former Arsenal and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Emma Byrne; as recently as 2021, the club finished fifth place in the Women’s Championship (now WSL2). Relegation from the second-tier in 2024, was followed up by a mid-table league finish last season.

Last Meeting

Both Gwalia and Lewes met last season, with both games finishing 0-0.
