Match Report: Lewes v Gwalia United

Lewes FC returned to winning ways on Sunday afternoon with a decisive 4–0 victory over Gwalia United at The Dripping Pan. Goals from Liv Carpenter, Leah Lane, Rebekah Trewhitt and Hannah Godfrey sealed the points for The Rooks, who were clinical in front of goal and capitalised on every major opportunity that came their way. It was a bright start from both sides, with Gwalia showing intent in the early stages and looking to press high. The visitors enjoyed good possession in the first twenty minutes and created two strong chances that might have shifted the tone of the match. The first came when Georgia Walters was bundled over inside the box, only for the referee to wave play on despite strong appeals from the Gwalia bench. Soon after, Walters went close again with a shot from 30 yards that just cleared the crossbar — inches away from giving Gwalia the lead..

Instead, it was Lewes who made the breakthrough. Their first real opening saw Liv Carpenter react quickest to a through ball in the area and finish sharply past Benedict Håland into the corner. That goal seemed to settle the home side and knock Gwalia off rhythm. From that point, Lewes began to grow in confidence, moving the ball with composure and making the most of their time in the final third.

Leah Lane doubled the advantage on the half hour mark, finding space to slot home a precise finish following a quick counter-attack down the right. When Rebekah Trewhitt added a third just before the break — slotting calmly past the keeper after being played through on goal — Lewes had effectively ended the contest with a commanding 3–0 lead at half-time.

The second half was more of a contested affair, with Gwalia working hard to regain structure and composure. Their defensive line held firmer after the restart, limiting Lewes to half-chances for much of the period. However, the hosts’ efficiency in attack continued to shine through. With half an hour to play, defender Hannah Godfrey rose highest to head home the fourth, sealing a result that reflected Lewes’s clinical edge on the day.

Lewes’s ruthless finishing proved decisive. It will be an afternoon the South Wales side will look to move on from quickly, with lessons to be taken about game management and maintaining momentum in key moments. The win lifts Lewes above Gwalia in the league table and marks an important step back towards form for The Rooks. For Gwalia United, attention now turns to responding positively as they prepare for their next fixture against Tottenham Hotspur PGA next week at USW Sports Park— one that will offer an immediate opportunity to reset and refocus after a challenging trip to the south coast.
