Evans free-kick gives Gwalia United victory

Evans’ free-kick earns Gwalia United victory at Marine Academy Plymouth

Gwalia United made a strong start and held on to claim a 1-0 away win over Marine Academy Plymouth, with Summer Evans’ first-half free-kick providing the decisive goal. The visitors threatened from the opening minutes. Manon Pearce’s early effort won Gwalia a corner, and they continued to put pressure on the Marine Academy defence. Evans then delivered a free-kick after Issy Newns was fouled, but the home goalkeeper gathered it well.

Pearce was again involved as Gwalia kept pushing. A shot from the forward was saved by the Marine Academy goalkeeper, and another corner followed. Emma Thomas then produced a neat flick-on to create a further opening, although the home side managed to clear the danger.

The pressure finally brought a breakthrough in the 32nd minute. Evans lined up a free-kick and struck towards goal; the ball took a deflection and wrong-footed the goalkeeper, giving Gwalia the lead. It was a fine strike from the young Midfielder. Marine Academy looked for an immediate response and won a free-kick of their own two minutes later, but the effort sailed over the crossbar.

Gwalia went into half-time 1-0 ahead after creating the clearer chances during the opening period.

Marine Academy returned for the second half needing to find a way back into the contest. Gwalia continued to look dangerous, however, and came close to extending their lead just after the hour. In the 60th minute, Esme Kilburn-Thompson went down in the penalty area as the visitors appealed for a spot-kick, but the referee judged that no penalty should be awarded. Soon afterwards, a promising move between Esme Kilburn-Thompson and Daisy Ackerman ended with a shot that went just over the bar.

Gwalia made changes as the half wore on, with Imi Scourfield replacing Issy Newns and Elin Thomas coming on for Callie Jones. The substitutions helped the visitors refresh their side as they looked to protect their narrow advantage. Marine Academy continued to search for an equaliser, but Gwalia kept the hosts at bay. Evans’ deflected free-kick remained the game’s defining moment, securing a hard-fought away victory and three points for Gwalia.
