As Gwalia United commemorates its 50th anniversary, it’s fitting to honour its past players and members. Founded in 1975 as Llanedeyrn L.F.C., the club has undergone several transformations, adopting the name Gwalia United in 2024 to reflect its Welsh heritage.
This week’s feature is on Deb Ball – A True Ambassador for Cardiff City Ladies and Gwalia United

Deb Ball has been a cornerstone of Cardiff City Ladies for over 25 years, leaving an indelible mark on the club and the women’s game in South Wales. Her journey with the club began after she retired from playing for local rivals Tongwynlais. Determined to give back to the sport that had brought her so much joy, Deb joined Cardiff City Ladies as a volunteer. At the time, the club had only recently established a mini section for under-10s, and Deb saw an opportunity to share her passion and knowledge with the next generation of players.
Deb’s coaching career and her impact has been nothing short of remarkable. Over the years, she has coached girls from under-10s right through to the senior reserve level. Her dedication didn’t waver, even when the challenges of COVID-19 forced a reset. After the pandemic, she took charge of an under-12s team, guiding them with patience and expertise as they progressed to under-15s. Next season, these players will be ready to step up to the senior squad — a testament to Deb’s ability to nurture talent and instill confidence in her players.
Beyond coaching, Deb has been an invaluable figure behind the scenes. Her expertise in media and IT has been instrumental in the club’s development, ensuring smooth operations and effective communication. Her role in the junior section has also been vital, particularly when the club had six junior teams. As the club’s Safeguarding Officer, Deb ensured that players’ welfare remained a top priority, creating a safe and supportive environment for young athletes.
Deb’s influence extends beyond Cardiff City Ladies. Her skills and commitment to player welfare were recognized by the South Wales Women’s and Girls’ League (SWWGL), who invited her to join their committee as the League’s Welfare and Safeguarding Officer. In this role, she has continued to advocate for the well-being of young players across South Wales, reinforcing the values of respect, integrity, and sportsmanship.
Deb Ball has been a true ambassador for women’s football, not only at Cardiff City Ladies but throughout South Wales. Her dedication, passion, and commitment to developing young talent have shaped the careers of countless players. Many former players credit their sporting values and successes to Deb’s guidance. Her contribution to the club and the wider women’s game is immeasurable, and her legacy as a mentor and role model will undoubtedly endure for years to come.
