Gwalia United Confirm Launch of U17s Team for 2026/27 Season

Gwalia United FC are proud to confirm the launch of an Under-17s team for the 2026/27 season, further strengthening the club’s long-standing commitment to developing elite Welsh talent and creating one of the clearest player pathways in the women’s game.

The new U17s programme will sit in direct alignment with the club’s senior environment, with a connected coaching structure and shared playing philosophy running throughout the pathway. The move represents a significant strategic step for Gwalia United, ensuring young players are developed within a consistent curriculum and style of play from youth football through to senior women’s football.

The programme will be led by Deb Ball and Rob Craig, who will work closely alongside senior staff to help create a strong bridge between age-grade development and senior performance.

Deb Ball said: “This is a hugely exciting moment for the club and for the players coming into the pathway. Gwalia United has always had a proud history of developing talented young footballers and giving them opportunities, and this strengthens that identity even further.

“The aim is not simply to have another team, but to create a genuinely aligned development environment where players understand the expectations, the style of play and the standards required to progress into senior football.”

Rob Craig added: “What makes this particularly exciting is the alignment between the pathway and the senior environment. Young players will be exposed to the same principles, behaviours and football identity throughout the club. That continuity is incredibly important in modern player development.

“Gwalia’s history shows that the club is prepared to trust young players in meaningful environments, and that is a major attraction for ambitious Welsh talent.”

Senior Manager Cori Williams-Mills believes the launch of the U17s side reflects Gwalia United’s wider vision for the women’s game in Wales.

“Developing the next generation of Welsh players is absolutely central to Gwalia United’s purpose,” said Williams-Mills. “We are incredibly proud of the club’s legacy in bringing elite players through, but this is about building something even more connected and sustainable for the future.

“In recent seasons, young players — including Under-19 players and younger — have accumulated thousands of minutes in senior women’s football against strong FA Women’s National League opposition. That is not accidental. It reflects a genuine commitment to development and to creating opportunities for Welsh players in high-level competitive environments.

“There are different ways to build football clubs. Some clubs try to buy success, buy longevity and buy finished products. Our ambition is different. We want to develop players, improve players and create players.

“If players are good enough, they are old enough. That belief has always been part of Gwalia United’s identity and this new U17s programme strengthens that pathway even further.”

The introduction of the U17s team represents another important chapter in Gwalia United’s evolution, reinforcing the club’s ambition to remain one of the leading development environments for women’s football in Wales while continuing to provide visible opportunities for the country’s next generation of talent.

Gwalia United co-owner Damien Singh said: “This is important because it reinforces exactly what the club wants to stand for. We want to be recognised as an environment which creats opportunities and develops Welsh players within a genuine long-term pathway.

“As we have seen with players such as Emma Thomas, Shurima Vine, Keira O’Keefe, there is enormous value in young age grade players experiencing senior women’s football, and the fact that so many young players have already accumulated significant senior minutes at Gwalia demonstrates that this is more than a slogan for us; it is part of the club’s identity. This link that we will create between the u17s and the senior team reinforces that.”
