Gwalia United to Celebrate 50th Anniversary with Dinner
Gwalia United, one of the pioneering clubs in Welsh women’s football, is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a special reunion dinner at the Village Hotel Cardiff on June 21. The event will bring together past and present players, staff, and supporters to mark half a century of success, camaraderie, and groundbreaking achievements in Welsh women’s sport.
Founded in 1975, Gwalia United – previously Cardiff City Ladies – has been a foundation stone of Welsh women’s football, laying the groundwork for the growth and recognition of the women’s game in the country. Over the decades, the club has not only produced international stars, talented players but also created a close-knit community that continues to resonate with those who have worn the shirt.
Karen Jones MBE, a long-time club member and former player, expressed her excitement about the upcoming celebration:
“It’s incredible to think that Gwalia United has reached such a milestone. The club has meant so much to so many people over the years. This reunion is a chance for us to reflect on those early days, reconnect with old friends, and celebrate the progress we’ve made—not just as a team, but as part of the wider movement in women’s sport in Wales.”
The evening will feature a sit-down dinner, and a chance to reminisce over photos, trophies, and memorabilia from the past five decades. The event is expected to draw a large crowd, including former players and coaches who have not seen each other in years.
Michele Adams MBE, another influential figure in the club’s history, highlighted the emotional significance of the gathering:
“It’s more than just a dinner—it’s a celebration of everything Gwalia United stands for. We’ve built lifelong friendships through this club, and this night will be about honouring those connections. It’s a rare opportunity for everyone to come together, share stories, and recognise the incredible impact Gwalia United has had on Welsh women’s football.”
The 50th anniversary dinner is not only a tribute to the club’s sporting legacy but also a testament to the sense of community and belonging that Gwalia United has fostered. Over the years, Gwalia United has produced players who have gone on to represent Wales at international level, contributing to the growth and success of women’s football in the country. But for many involved with the club, the true legacy lies in the friendships forged and the sense of unity that remains strong decades later.
“It’s not just about football,” Jones added. “It’s about the people, the memories, and the shared experiences. That’s what makes Gwalia United so special.”
As the club looks ahead to the future, the 50th-anniversary celebration promises to be a poignant reminder of its roots and a fitting tribute to those who have made Gwalia United a cornerstone of Welsh sport.
