Whitmore double seals emphatic win for the Pilgrims
Plymouth Argyle produced a clinical second-half display to overwhelm Gwalia United 5–1 at Home Park with Charlotte Whitmore’s brace sealing a convincing victory after a competitive first half.
The early exchanges were open, both sides seeking to impose themselves on the ball. Plymouth started brightly, Phoebe Poole threatening twice in the opening stages — first latching onto a long pass before being denied by Gwalia goalkeeper Benedicte Haaland’s alert reactions. At the other end, Beth McGowan and Manon Pearce probed from deep, with McGowan’s curling free-kick on 21 minutes narrowly missing the far post.
Tamara Wilcock opened the scoring for the hosts on 36 minutes, meeting a loose ball in the area to drive home beyond Haaland. The strike rewarded Plymouth’s growing control after a period of sustained pressure. Gwalia, though, had their moments — Ackerman and Asker both forcing saves from Hermione Cull — but it was the Pilgrims who went into the break ahead after Tianna Teisar rattled the crossbar late in the half.
Gwalia came out fighting after the interval, pushing higher and looking for parity. But their momentum was halted nine minutes into the second half when Teisar made it 2–0, slotting past Haaland following neat combination play down the right. Moments later, substitute Cerys Jones and forward Casi Gregson injected fresh energy into the visitors’ attack, and Gwalia began to threaten again.
Their persistence paid off in the 71st minute, as Gregson broke the line to pull one back, calmly finishing low into the bottom corner to reduce the deficit to 3–1. For a brief spell, it felt as though a comeback was possible.
However, Plymouth swiftly reasserted control. Ellie Noble restored the two-goal cushion with a composed strike from close range on 67 minutes, before Whitmore came into her own. First, she reacted quickest to a rebound in the 82nd minute to extend the lead to 4–1, and then added her second six minutes later — a composed finish into the corner that put the result beyond doubt.
Gwalia continued to compete but Plymouth’s pressing told. Late efforts from Pearce and Gregson were dealt with comfortably by Cull, who marshalled her area well. Cerys Jones and Amina Vine were both shown yellow cards as the contest became increasingly stretched, while Haaland’s late saves prevented further damage.
The final whistle confirmed a dominant win for Plymouth, whose sharpness in transition and quality in the final third proved decisive. Gwalia, meanwhile, will take positives from their first-half resilience and Gregson’s well-taken goal, but will rue moments of sloppiness that shifted the momentum away from them.
