Gwalia United booked their place in the next round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup with a 4–0 victory away at Winchester City Flyers — a scoreline that reflected both their ruthless second-half display. It was an afternoon that began in torrential Hampshire rain but ended in bright spirits for Stevie McCarthy-Campbell’s side, who overcame a spirited Winchester outfit thanks to goals from Tia Asker, Ellie-Mai Sanford, Manon Pearce, and Eliza Collie.

The game began at a frenetic pace, with both sides creating early chances. Gwalia’s Cori Williams-Mills and Manon Pearce tested the Winchester backline, while goalkeeper Benedicte Haaland was twice called upon to deny Chelsie Hay and Laura Da Silva.
The breakthrough came in the 13th minute, courtesy of a moment of individual quality from Tia Asker. Played in by a defence-splitting pass, Asker shifted the ball right, then left, before curling a stunning left-footed strike into the top corner — a goal worthy of any round in the competition.
Winchester looked for a swift response and were handed a golden opportunity when they were awarded a penalty in the 19th minute. But Hay’s effort was superbly saved by Haaland, diving low to her left to preserve Gwalia’s lead.

The hosts continued to threaten through Kayleigh Tonks, who fired over when clean through, while Gwalia came close to a second when Asker forced Eleanor Parker into a fine fingertip save. Despite Winchester’s best efforts, Gwalia went into the interval 1–0 up — a lead earned through composure and clinical finishing.
Gwalia emerged for the second half with renewed control, managing the game effectively while gradually wearing down their opponents. A series of substitutions injected fresh energy, with Amina Vine, Bonnie Gready, and Eliza Collie all making an impact off the bench.
The second goal came in the 73rd minute through Ellie-Mai Sanford, who showed excellent composure to meet Beth McGowan’s well-weighted free-kick and slot home from close range. It was a deserved reward for Gwalia’s dominance in possession and pressure from set-pieces.
Moments earlier, Manon Pearce had gone close when her cross-turned-shot clipped the bar, while Ackerman and Asker both forced Parker into routine saves. The momentum, however, was all Gwalia’s.
Winchester’s best chance of the half came from a clever corner routine that ended with Vine striking the post, but any hopes of a late fightback were snuffed out in the closing stages as Gwalia turned the screw.
With the game stretched in stoppage time, Gwalia’s attacking quality shone through.
First, Manon Pearce made it 3–0 in the 91st minute, timing her run to perfection to beat the offside trap, round the goalkeeper, and calmly roll the ball into the empty net. Then, deep into added time, Eliza Collie added the gloss. Played through by the impressive Asker, Collie turned inside her marker before finishing neatly to cap off a fine performance — her first goal since returning from injury and a fitting way to seal progression.

The 4–0 scoreline might have looked comfortable, but it owed much to a complete team effort — from Haaland’s penalty save to the composure shown in midfield and the creativity in the final third. Gwalia’s defensive solidity was again evident, with Jessie Taylor and Cerys Jones commanding at the back, and full-backs McGowan and Sanford contributing both defensively and offensively. The midfield trio controlled the tempo, allowing the forward line to flourish as spaces opened up late on.

For McCarthy-Campbell’s young squad, it was another step forward — not just in terms of the scoreline, but in the maturity and patience shown across 90 testing minutes. The result sees Gwalia United progress confidently into the next round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup, with momentum continuing to build both in the league and cup competitions.
