Gwalia United 0–3 AFC Bournemouth

FA Women’s National League

USW Sport Park, Treforest

AFC Bournemouth showed their title credentials in Treforest on Sunday, mastering the gale-force conditions in the second half to defeat Gwalia United 3–0 at USW Sport Park.

The opening 45 minutes saw Gwalia with the wind at their backs, but they struggled to make it count. Cori Williams-Mills forced an early save from visiting keeper Erin Foley, while Georgia Walters and Casi Gregson both tried their luck from distance without reward. At the other end, Bournemouth came closest through Jessie Hennessy, who rattled the post inside ten minutes, and Jenna Markham, who struck the woodwork just before the break. Despite Gwalia’s territorial advantage with the elements, the sides went into half-time level at 0–0.

After the restart, the conditions swung in Bournemouth’s favour — and so did the game. The Cherries had already seen one effort ruled out for a foul on Benedicte Håland before Markham broke the deadlock in the 51st minute, steering home after sustained pressure.

From there, Bournemouth grew in confidence and used the wind to pin Gwalia back. Sophie Quirk doubled the lead on 74 minutes with a smart finish, before adding her second in stoppage time to complete the win. Gwalia worked hard to respond, with Georgia Walters having a shot blocked and substitute Keira O’Keefe going close, but they were unable to find a way through a disciplined Cherries defence.

Håland impressed in goal for the home side, pulling off several fine saves. But ultimately, Bournemouth’s ability to exploit the second-half conditions proved decisive, and their ruthlessness in scoring underlining why they sit top of the division.

For Gwalia, it was a case of lessons learned in both boxes — and a reminder of the fine margins in a league where every chance, and every gust of wind, can turn the tide.
