AJN Stadium, Keynsham — September 18, 2025
A glorious late-summer evening in Somerset set the stage for Gwalia United’s first away victory of the League Cup campaign, as James Thomas’s side edged out Keynsham Town 1–0 in a fiercely competitive Women’s National League Cup encounter.
The decisive moment came in the 72nd minute when Katie Quick, outstanding all night, capped her dominant performance with a composed finish to seal three hard-earned points for the visitors. Supported by a ferocious defensive shift from Callie Jones and an eye-catching debut from Emma Thomas, Gwalia demonstrated both grit and quality on a night that could prove pivotal in shaping their season.
A Tight, Balanced First Half
The home side began brightly, pinning Gwalia back with their direct running and set-piece pressure. Twice inside the opening 20 minutes, they forced Benedicte Håland into action — the Norwegian goalkeeper showing sharp reflexes to tip over from close range and then smother a low shot that threatened to creep inside the far post.
Gwalia grew into the contest. Izzy Caunt rattled the woodwork in the 19th minute with a thunderous strike, while Casi Gregson and Georgia Walters stretched Keynsham’s back line with their tireless running. Chloe Jones, the Keynsham keeper, was equal to the threat, parrying efforts from Walters and Vine to keep the scores level.
By half-time, the game remained goalless but finely poised, with Gwalia looking increasingly assured in possession. Eliza Collie’s tenacity was also beginning to create gaps in the defence.
Thomas shuffled his pack at the interval, introducing Callie Jones for Beth McGowan and Tia Asker for Gregson.
Within minutes, Asker’s direct running opened space for Quick to rifle a shot just wide of the bottom corner. Moments later, debutant Emma Thomas nearly marked her first senior starting appearance with a goal, glancing a header from a corner narrowly past the post. Her aerial presence and confidence in demanding the ball were instant positives for the visitors.
But it was Callie Jones who truly shifted the tone of the half. Her crunching tackles and relentless hunger in 50/50s set a standard across the pitch. In the 55th minute, she timed a sliding challenge to perfection, halting a dangerous Keynsham counter. From that point on, Gwalia carried themselves with renewed bite. As the game ticked into its final quarter, Gwalia’s pressure finally told. A sweeping move down the left saw Vine combine with Asker before the ball was worked centrally. Quick, ghosting into the box from deep, latched onto a loose clearance. With composure and precision, she slotted the ball low past Chloe Jones and into the net.
It was a deserved reward for Gwalia’s Quick, whose influence had grown throughout the evening. Her strike sparked jubilant celebrations on the pitch and in the away end, and shifted the momentum firmly in Gwalia’s favour.
Keynsham threw everything forward in the closing stages, searching for an equaliser. Long balls rained into the Gwalia penalty area, but Håland and her defenders stood firm. Emma Thomas also played her part in the defensive stand, tracking back tirelessly and showing both bravery and composure under pressure. Together, the mix of youth and experience carried Gwalia through the nervy final minutes.
