McGowan strike downs Wimbledon

AFC Wimbledon 0–1 Gwalia United

Match Report By Michael Addison

Bethan McGowan’s 15th-minute strike proved decisive as Gwalia United battled to a hard-fought away victory against AFC Wimbledon at Imperial Fields. McGowan’s instinctive finish capped off a flowing counter-attack, with Tia Asker driving from deep before releasing Georgia Walters, who in turn set up McGowan to slot beyond Rose Kite. It was a moment of composure that ultimately separated the sides in a tense contest.

Wimbledon, roared on by their home crowd, created numerous opportunities to level. Emily Wallace was denied by a superb block from Emma Thomas just before the break, while the Dons twice struck the woodwork either side of half-time. Ashlee Hincks, their most dangerous outlet, saw a number of efforts kept out by Gwalia’s goalkeeper Benedicte Haaland, who produced a string of saves.

A second half goal was briefly celebrated by the home side when a cross was bundled home, only for the assistant’s flag to cut short the celebrations. McLachlan and Hincks both went close, while Kelly-Jade Whelan’s late introduction gave Wimbledon renewed energy in the closing stages.

Gwalia, however, stood firm. Haaland commanded her area with authority, frustrating Wimbledon’s forwards. The visitors even threatened a late second when substitutes Eliza Collie and Casi Gregson combined, Kite having to scramble to keep the deficit at one. Gregson almost doubled the lead with a pacy thirty yard run in the 90th minute only for Kite saving marvellously to deny the Lampeter striker.

Eight minutes of added time brought more pressure, but Gwalia’s back line held their shape, clearing wave after wave of corners. When Whelan lashed over deep into stoppage time, relief spread through the travelling contingent.

It was not a performance without nerves, but the three points underline Gwalia’s resilience and give them back-to-back away wins in the league.
