Georgia Walters and Tia Asker were on the scoresheet as Gwalia United produced a composed and professional performance to defeat Brighton & Hove Albion and book their place in the FA Women’s National League Plate semi-finals.
Brighton started brightly, circulating the ball confidently in the opening stages and enjoying much of the early possession. For all their neat build-up play, however, they struggled to translate that control into meaningful chances, with neither goalkeeper called into action in the first 10 minutes.
Gwalia’s back line were briefly tested when Ameliah Yarwood’s pass almost gifted Brighton a sight of goal, but Cerys Jones reacted sharply to recover and avert the danger. That moment proved a turning point, as the hosts gradually asserted themselves on the contest.
Ellie-Mai Sanford’s quick-thinking free-kick from deep inside Gwalia’s half injected urgency into their play, and Tia Asker came close to catching Brighton out, keeping the ball in play before sending a cross that brushed the roof of the net.
The breakthrough arrived on the half-hour. A free-kick into the Brighton penalty area caused enough disruption for the referee to point to the spot, and Walters made no mistake, calmly sending Silvana Marshall-Miranda the wrong way to give Gwalia a deserved lead.
Walters remained a constant threat and nearly doubled the advantage before the interval, slipping through the offside trap to pick out Keira O’Keefe, only for Marshall-Miranda to produce a smart low save.
Brighton attempted to respond after the break, but Gwalia’s organisation and discipline limited their opportunities. The hosts, by contrast, continued to look the more dangerous side, and their pressure was rewarded when Tia Asker added a second goal to put clear daylight between the teams. Clever play and resilience from the impressive Daisy Ackerman creating the chance.
Walters went close to adding her second late on, controlling and volleying goalwards, but was again denied by the Brighton goalkeeper. Gwalia comfortably managed the closing stages, making a series of substitutions to see out the result as Brighton struggled to find a way back.
At full-time, Walters’ penalty and Asker’s second-half strike sealed a 2–0 victory and sent Gwalia United confidently through to the semi-finals.
