AFC Bournemouth 2 Gwalia United 0

A first-half captain’s strike and a late penalty saw AFC Bournemouth maintain their promotion push with a 2-0 victory over Gwalia United, in a match report by Michael Addison.

The hosts took the lead in stoppage time before the interval when skipper Abby Jones stepped forward to drive home from range, rewarding a spell of sustained pressure and giving the Cherries a foothold they rarely relinquished. Gwalia, however, produced a resilient display against one of the division’s frontrunners and threatened throughout an evenly contested first half. Early on, Erin Foley’s miscued clearance fell kindly for Georgia Walters, but her effort bobbled over, while Manon Pearce forced a sharp save after being picked out during a quick break led by Tia Asker.

Bournemouth’s best early opportunity fell to Sophie Quirk, who fired over from the right, before Elena Cole and Georgia Wilson both tested goalkeeper Benedicte Haaland, who remained assured throughout. Just as it appeared the sides would reach the break level, Jones struck decisively. Collecting possession outside the area, she unleashed a firm effort that beat Haaland to give the home side a crucial advantage at half-time.

Gwalia responded positively after the restart and were inches away from an equaliser. Quirk struck the post for Bournemouth early in the second half, but the visitors soon created their best opportunity of the match when Asker’s deflected shot looped goalwards before being gathered by Foley. Haaland continued to keep Gwalia in contention with important saves, notably denying Quirk from close range and later standing firm when Jenna Markham broke through one-on-one late on.

The contest was effectively settled with 10 minutes remaining when Bournemouth were awarded a penalty following a foul inside the box. Zoe Barratt stepped up and converted confidently to secure the points. Despite late pressure, including a deep free-kick from Walters that drifted through to Foley in stoppage time, Gwalia could not find a breakthrough as Bournemouth saw out a win.

Gwalia now turn their attention to their next fixture in a fortnight, when they host AFC Wimbledon at USW Sport Park on Sunday 8 March (14:00 GMT).
