Gwalia United returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion with a commanding 5–0 victory over AFC Wimbledon at USW Sport Park, producing one of their most complete performances of the season. A stunning opener from Daisy Ackerman set the hosts on their way before Georgia Walters doubled the lead before half-time. In the second half Manon Pearce struck twice in eight minutes to put the result beyond doubt, before Walters added her second to complete a five-star afternoon for the home side. The result combined attacking flair with defensive discipline, as Gwalia controlled large spells of the contest and limited the visitors to only a handful of clear opportunities.
Fast start but patience required
Gwalia began the match with clear intent, pressing high and moving the ball quickly through midfield as they sought to impose themselves early on. The first opportunity came inside the opening 15 minutes when a flowing move involving Tia Asker and Callie Jones ended with Jones shooting from the left side of the penalty area, only for Wimbledon goalkeeper Rose Kite to make the save. Moments later Walters attempted an ambitious effort from just inside the Wimbledon half after spotting Kite off her line, but the attempt drifted wide. Gwalia continued to apply pressure, with Asker firing into the side netting and Keira O’Keefe combining neatly with Asker to create another chance that flew just over the crossbar. Despite the hosts’ dominance, Wimbledon threatened occasionally on the break. Ashlee Hincks tested Gwalia goalkeeper Benni Haaland after a quick counter-attack, but the shot was comfortably saved.
Ackerman’s moment of brilliance
The breakthrough arrived in spectacular fashion in the 28th minute. Ackerman collected the ball outside the penalty area and, with little hesitation, unleashed a powerful strike that arrowed into the top corner beyond the reach of Kite. It was a moment of real quality that reflected Gwalia’s growing control of the match. The goal lifted the home side further and they nearly doubled their lead moments later when Ackerman struck the outside of the post following defensive hesitation from Wimbledon. Eight minutes after the opener, Gwalia did have their second. Ackerman again played the decisive role, delivering an inviting cross into the penalty area where Walters rose highest to guide a precise header into the top-right corner. Wimbledon attempted to respond before the interval, but Haaland remained composed when called upon and Gwalia carried a deserved 2–0 lead into half-time.
Gwalia pull away after the break
The visitors began the second half with renewed energy and substitute Kaylee Buckingham caused problems down the flank with a dangerous ball into the area. However, Gwalia quickly regained their composure and extended their advantage in the 56th minute. Asker won possession high up the pitch and immediately fed Ackerman down the right-hand side. Ackerman’s cross found Pearce in space inside the penalty area, and the forward finished calmly with a low strike into the corner to make it 3–0. Eight minutes later Pearce struck again to put the result beyond doubt. A defensive mix-up from Wimbledon allowed the striker to react first, hooking the ball over the advancing Kite to register her second goal in quick succession and Gwalia’s fourth of the afternoon.
Walters completes the rout
With the match firmly under control, Gwalia introduced several substitutions to manage the closing stages. One of those changes almost paid immediate dividends when substitute Molly Kehoe struck an effort that deflected onto the crossbar. The rebound fell kindly to Walters at the back post, and the forward showed composure to place the ball into the net for her second goal and Gwalia’s fifth in the 71st minute. Wimbledon continued to battle and nearly found a consolation when Alisha Buckingham met a bouncing ball on the half-volley, but Haaland produced an excellent one-handed save to turn the effort away. The Gwalia goalkeeper was called into action again deep into stoppage time, making a low stop to deny Kaylee Buckingham and preserve the clean sheet.
A complete performance
The result capped a dominant display from Gwalia, whose attacking quality was matched by an organised defensive performance that ensured Wimbledon rarely built sustained pressure. Ackerman’s creativity and goal threat proved decisive in the first half, while Pearce and Walters provided the clinical finishing that ultimately separated the sides. The victory also offered a timely boost for Gwalia as they continue their push through the latter stages of the league campaign.
What’s next
Gwalia United return to action on Sunday 22 March when they host Lewes at USW Sport Park, with kick-off scheduled for 14:00 GMT.
