Watford seal title with victory over spirited Gwalia United
By Michael Addison
Watford clinched the FA Women’s National League title and promotion with a 3-1 victory over Gwalia United, in a contest in which the hosts took consolation in showing they can compete with the very best in the division. The newly crowned champions were pushed hard for long periods by a side that refused to yield, even after falling two goals behind in the first half.
Gwalia began brightly, showing intent from the outset. Inside 10 minutes, Georgia Walters delivered a teasing free-kick towards the back post, where Shurima Vine rose well but could only direct her header wide. Moments later, Tia Asker’s intelligent movement created space for Molly Kehoe, whose effort forced a corner as the hosts looked to unsettle the visitors early.
Watford, however, gradually asserted their authority. Madison Perry struck the outside of the post midway through the half, a warning sign of what was to come as the Hornets began to dominate possession and territory. The breakthrough arrived in unfortunate circumstances for Gwalia in the 24th minute. A defensive mix-up saw Callie Jones divert the ball into her own net under pressure, handing Watford the lead against the run of Gwalia’s early momentum.
Just two minutes later, the visitors doubled their advantage. Coral Haines, a constant threat throughout, finished clinically after being picked out in the penalty area to give Watford control of the contest. Despite the setback, Gwalia responded admirably. Asker continued to provide a focal point in attack, twice testing goalkeeper Sophie Hillyerd before the break. The striker’s powerful effort towards the near post was well saved, while Vine again threatened from a set-piece, heading wide from a corner.
At the other end, Watford came close to extending their lead before half-time, with Perry heading over from close range, but Gwalia went into the interval trailing 2-0. The hosts emerged for the second half with renewed purpose. Within minutes, they forced a corner through Walters, and Asker fired narrowly wide after Imi Scourfield had nodded the ball back into danger. Their persistence was rewarded just after the hour mark. A long throw into the box caused confusion in the Watford defence, and Asker reacted quickest, poking the ball home from close range to halve the deficit and ignite hopes of a comeback.
But champions find a way to respond, and Watford did just that. In the 63rd minute, Haines struck again, restoring the two-goal cushion with a composed finish that ultimately settled the contest and confirmed the title for the visitors.
Even then, Gwalia continued to push, and late substitutions saw fresh legs introduced as the hosts sought a way back into the game. Bonnie Gready made an immediate impact after coming on, winning a free-kick in the closing stages as Gwalia pressed until the final whistle.
Attention now turns to their final league fixture of the campaign, away to Exeter City at St James’ Park on Sunday 26 April (14:00 BST), where they will look to end the season on a positive note.
